Highland

Highland dancing incorporates the art and beauty of Highland and National dances brought to New Zealand by the early Scottish settlers. Highland Dancing includes popular dances like the Highland Fling and Sword Dance, while National dancing incorporates Irish (Jig, Hornpipes) and English (Sailors Hornpipes) dances. Highland dancers are known for their beautiful costumes (kilts) that come in a vast array of colours and designs. Competitions can be found all over the country, incorporating Centre and Island championships, culminating in age group New Zealand Championships held once a year. Examinations are also held two times per year for all age groups and levels. Senior dancers have the opportunity to participate in PACANZ National Young Performer Awards, compete overseas, or perform with the Highland Dance Academy of NZ
